29 years ago (1990)

We celebrated the release of anti-apartheid campaigner Nelson Mandela after 27 years in jail. Mandela “raised his fist in triumph” and promised to “continue the armed struggle” for freedom for all South Africans, regardless of race.

We also told how armed police fired on the 200,000-strong crowd that had gathered to welcome him.

55 years ago (1964)

Twenty-one people died in fighting between ethnic Greeks and Turks in the Cypriot port of Limassol.

The two groups were engaged in a bitter civil war that followed the island’s independen­ce from Britain in 1960.

In March 1964 the UN deployed a 7,000-strong peacekeepi­ng force in an effort to stem the violence.

25 years ago (1994)

Edvard Munch’s iconic painting The Scream was stolen from the National Art Museum in Oslo, Norway. Thieves broke in through a window, scaled down a ladder and cut the picture from the wall.

It was later recovered in an operation by Norwegian and British police.
