Phil’s 50th win

- BERNIE McGUIRE

IT TOOK four days and 25 minutes for a thankful Phil Mickelson to land his 50th career title by capturing the weather-affected AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

The American left-hander and England’s Paul Casey were back on the course early yesterday after Sunday’s 16th-hole ‘stand-off’ between the two players.

Mickelson felt he could see in the closing darkness and wanted to carry on, while Casey said he could not read his three-foot putt.

Casey returned to hole out 14 hours later, but Mickelson, 48, went on to become the oldest winner of the event when a final-hole birdie gave him a closing round of 65 and a 19-under-par tally.

Casey, who led by three shots after the third round, also birdied the last hole to grab second spot with a 71 and a 16-under total.

“I thanked Paul for having us finish this morning because I sometimes get in my own little bubble and I don’t see the big picture,” said Mickelson. “He really protected both of us as the greens last night were beat-up.”
