The hunt’s still on... Killing Eve to return next year

- By Alex Green

KILLING Eve bosses are remaining tight-lipped about its next series.

The hit drama will return to screens for a third season next year, it was revealed yesterday.

The BBC America production will broadcast in the US in the spring but British fans will have to wait until later in the year to see it.

Executive producer Sally Woodward Gentle made the announcement during a masterclass at the Edinburgh TV Festival. Asked what she could reveal about the plot, she replied: “Absolutely nothing.”

Killing Eve stars Sandra Oh as Eve, an MI5 agent on the hunt for psychopathic Russian assassin Villanelle, played by Jodie Comer.

The show was created by Fleabag star Phoebe Waller-Bridge who is helping write the script for new Bond film No Time To Die, out next year. Emerald Fennell wrote the second season and is returning for the third.

Appearing on the Edinburgh panel, Fiona Shaw, who plays the head of MI6’s Russia desk, said Fennell had cut jokes from the second series because she thought they were too similar to earlier ones written by Waller-Bridge.

She said: “In the beginning of season two there was a terribly rude joke about schools and nuns and it was in one draft and then it was gone. I said to Emerald, ‘You got rid of that?’ And she said, ‘Yes, it was too Phoebe’.

“She just thought, ‘I’m being Phoebe there, so I better stop that’.

“The writing was very different. Phoebe’s writing comes out of her marrow, and Emerald has the ability to bolt on something to the end of something and it absolutely transforms it.”
