Emery: We can rock the Kop

- By Mike Walters

UNAI EMERY says Arsenal are ready to make a big statement at Anfield.

The Gunners have shipped 22 goals in their last six trips to Liverpool, including a 5-1 pasting last December.

Emery’s opposite number, Jurgen Klopp, is unbeaten in seven meetings with Arsenal since his installation as Reds manager four years ago.

But Emery, above, said: “This match against them is an amazing opportunity for us to do something important, knowing it will be very difficult, but we really can show that we are here.

“We need to improve [our record against the top six] because when we are playing them it’s three points that you can take and they cannot take.”

Emery denied Klopp his first trophy at Anfield when Sevilla beat Liverpool in the Europa League final three years ago, and he admires the way the German has fortified the Liver bird’s

nest since. He added: “It’s one very good example – I spoke about them last year, my experience from outside, and how they have improved.

“Now I think they have a very strong style, their mentality is very strong and they are adding titles.

“We are working on our way to create a big mentality, but we also need time. They have an advantage on us in this way.

“But I really appreciate their work a lot. Their performance is amazing, their spirit and quality – they are a team who can feel strong.

“Right now the distance between Manchester City, Liverpool and us continues to be big, but we have a chance to reduce that distance.

“Last year we were very strong at home. I want to repeat and improve that way we created, but also showing our best competitive spirit away from home.”

Emery is convinced that there will be no repeat of the Gunners’ 5-1 drubbing at Anfield eight months ago, when Roberto Firmino’s hat-trick left Arsenal well adrift in the title race.

It also reduced Arsenal’s 22-match unbeaten run before Christmas to a distant memory.

But Emery said: “We conceded two penalties, which is not normal, and we were actually winning 1-0 but conceded two goals very quickly from mistakes.

“I don’t want us to make those mistakes again and it is a very good motivation for us to achieve a result against the winners of the Champions League.”
