Tragic

-

“Lots of people came to his aid and tried to give him CPR, but by the time he had been taken to hospital he was already brain dead.”

The victim, an apprentice joiner originally from Rhyl, North Wales, was kept on life support until his parents Julie Lewis and Patrick Boland arrived, said Ms Hughes, 54.

She added: “He had only decided to go at the last minute because he thought he could not afford it.

“Michael was a lovely lad – very shy and well mannered.

“He was always the person to step back and walk away. He was the life and soul of the party and was so funny. It’s a total waste of a life.

“We have been told by the British consulate that two Moroccan men have been charged with homicide. But the trial will not be for another year. They are in custody.”

Mr Lewis moved to London two years ago where he was known as Liam Boland, his name from the Irish side of his father’s family. He lived in Tufnell Park.

He had only been on Tenerife for four days and was staying with his friends at The Playa Real Hotel in Costa Adeje.

Friends have now set up a GoFundMe page to help with the £5,000 funeral costs.

His parents are thought to still be on the island and Ms Hughes said they are being looked after by the British consulate there.

Tributes have been paid to Mr Lewis on Facebook. One person wrote: “A lovely man with a cracking smile. You always put a smile on my face, even when you were winding me up. Stolen from us at 23.”

While another well-wisher added: “So tragic. A great guy he was in the short time I knew him. Not a bad bone in him.”
