Aide fired ‘over Hammond link’

-

A TREASURY adviser was escorted out of Downing Street by police after being sacked by Boris Johnson’s strategy chief.

Sonia Khan, political spokeswoman for Chancellor Sajid Javid, was dismissed by Dominic Cummings on Thursday.

He summoned Ms Khan to 10 Downing Street to tell her she was being fired and her government security passes were being confiscated, according to reports.

Ms Khan was reportedly axed for staying in touch with her old boss, former chancellor Philip Hammond, and leaking secrets to his allies. Although there is evidence Ms Khan had been in touch with former colleagues, there is no evidence she had been involved in leaking sensitive government information.

Mr Javid only learned Ms Khan had been sacked after Mr Cummings – who was behind the Vote Leave campaign in 2016 – fired her.

The fact he was sidelined in the decision is being seen among aides as a sign of Mr Cummings’ control over the Government.

Mr Cummings is understood to be imposing strict rules for special advisers in a bid to stamp out the frequent Whitehall leaks that hindered Theresa May’s administration.

Last night, he told them: “If you don’t like how I run things, there’s the door.”

Downing Street and the Treasury refused to comment on Ms Khan’s sacking yesterday.
