Confront

-

Taser instructor PC Gary Liddle, 37, said far more people are willing to confront the police these days, meaning the kit is vital in the fight against crime.

He said: “It is important we have access to this device.

“I would never go out without a Taser because I know I can protect myself and protect the public. Having that level of protection is an advantage and gives me another option rather than having to rely on handcuffs, pepper spray or my baton.

“It’s an extra bit of kit to keep me safe.”

PC Liddle, who has been with the force for 11 years and lives with his partner, added: “Policing has changed and we are looking after so many different parts of society now.

“People are far more willing to take us on and willing to have a fight.

“More people are saying ‘Let’s have a go’ and that’s increased during my time on the force but we just have to keep going. Unfortunately a Taser is now an essential part of our equipment.”
