‘You can hardly stand up’ breath test footie star told

- By Jan Disley

FORMER football star Dean Saunders was told by a police officer “You can hardly stand up” and “Your driving is atrocious” as he was being arrested, bodycam footage shows.

The former Liverpool and Wales striker was branded “arrogant” by a judge and jailed for 10 weeks on Wednesday after admitting failing to provide a breath specimen.

He served one day in prison, pending an appeal against the sentence.

The Crown Prosecution Service has now released video footage taken as Saunders, 55, was stopped by police driving home from Chester races on May 10.

It shows an officer opening his car door and demanding: “Get the keys out, turn the engine off now.Your driving is atrocious. Have you had any alcohol?”

Saunders is seen

“I’ve had one pint.”

He is then escorted from his £70,000 Audi A8 to the backseat replying: of a police car as an officer remarks that he can “hardly stand up”.

TV pundit Saunders, from Whitegate, Cheshire, is also seen being booked at a police station in the footage.

An officer can be heard explaining that he is required to provide a sample or he will be charged. Saunders replies: “Am I getting myself in more trouble by not doing it?”

Saunders’ lawyer, Conor Johnstone, claimed his client had only had two pints on the evening he was arrested.

He suggested this may have “interacted” with medication he takes for a knee injury.

Saunders has since been granted unconditional bail and released from prison as he appeals against the sentence. The case will be heard at Chester Crown Court on October 4.
