McIlroy’s blazing a trail in Swiss Alps
RORY McILROY hit new heights in the Swiss Alps yesterday to climb into contention at the Omega European Masters.
The world No2 banked £12.25million for winning the Tour Championships in Atlanta last weekend. And after crossing the Atlantic and opening with a 67, the Ulsterman carded eight birdies and an eagle in his 63 to sit one shot off the halfway lead in Crans-sur-Sierre.
He picked up five shots in four holes on his back nine, including a superb eagle at the 15th. “I played well, a little better than I did yesterday,” said McIlroy. “I am very excited to give myself another chance to win. It would have been very easy for me to take my foot off the gas after last week, but I really wanted to come here and play well. ”
Tommy Fleetwood is also in a five-way tie for second on 10 under par after his secondround 65. Gavin Green, of Malaysia, leads on 11 under as he seeks his first European Tour victory.
