Probation chief’s alert over release of vile baby abuser

- By Michael Knowles Home Affairs Correspondent

A PROBATION boss yesterday wrote an open letter to victims of Britain’s worst female paedophile ahead of her imminent release.

Vanessa George was locked up for a minimum of seven years after she sexually abused babies and toddlers at the nursery where she worked.

The judge who jailed her in 2009 said the indeterminate sentence was “in effect a life sentence”. But the Parole Board ordered her release, saying she had shown remorse.

The mum of two had pleaded guilty to sexual assault at Little Ted’s Nursery in Plymouth, Devon.

George, now 49, used her phone to take photos of her abusing the tots and shared them on the internet.

Disgust

Chief Probation Officer Sonia Crozier said George will be barred from entering Devon or Cornwall and unable to use the internet or see children unsupervised. Other exclusion zones could be added.

Ms Crozier wrote: “I share the disgust at the crimes committed by Vanessa George and I understand why the prospect of her release is so worrying to so many people. One of the most tragic elements of this case is that the police were unable to identify which children were abused.”

Plymouth MP Luke Pollard has blasted the paedophile for this silence, saying it was a callous attempt to have “power over the families”. He added: “It makes me properly sick to think she will be out in the next few days. We have tried everything we can to keep her behind bars.

“The police have re-opened the case to see whether there were any charges lying on file. There’s nothing that would keep her behind bars.

“The families have been let down twice. Once by lack of protection for the kids in the nursery and secondly by George being released early.”

Victims are also being kept informed of the parole reviews of Angela Allen and Colin Blanchard, with whom George shared the vile images of nursery children.

The Parole Board said its decisions were based solely on whether a prisoner was a risk to the public.
