LAST BLAST OF SUMMER ON WAY

- By Ross Kaniuk

AN INDIAN summer will give the country another chance to bask in high temperatures and sunshine.

Expected highs of up to 25C will see parks, beaches and beer gardens once again thronging with people throughout large parts of the country this weekend.

And the summer days won’t be drifting away next week either.

Met Office forecaster Marco Petagna said: “It is turning warmer and humid. It gets warmer still at the weekend and early next week, with 25C possible in the South.”

September’s monthly average is normally 17C. But the remnants of Tropical Storm Gabrielle and Hurricane Dorian, which devastated the Bahamas, have sent warm air surging through the south of the UK.

Their super-high wind speeds are channelling mild air north towards Britain – and many areas will enjoy the benefits for at least a week.

Weathermen are saying warm weather and sunshine could last until late in the month.

A Met Office spokesperson said: “Away from the North, which may remain more changeable, the settled conditions are likely to extend.”

The transatlantic storms run out of much of their steam by the time they have reached the UK, but that might not save Scotland and parts of the North-west and north Wales from some windy and rainy spells.

However, they drag the warm air behind them even when they cannot sustain their strength.

Ex-BBC weatherman John Hammond said: “Temperatures well into the 20s are quite feasible.

“There are indications high pressure will build.”
