Indian summer to last another fortnight

- By Mark Reynolds

BRITAIN’S Indian summer could last for weeks in a recordbreaking hot September, weather forecasters said yesterday.

Despite some showers expected today, temperatures are due to bounce back to around 77F (25C) by the weekend and continue until October.

And the balmy weather is eclipsing the 71F witnessed in parts of Spain. Thousands of sun worshippers turned out across the South including beaches from Brighton to Bournemouth.

Tourists visiting the the Tower of London enjoyed water sprays as they cooled down. Bookmakers

immediately slashed the odds to 5-4 on this month being the hottest September on record. A spokesman for Coral said: “Throughout the summer we had to endure some pretty miserable weather at times but we are ending the last of the later nights with some fantastic sunshine.

“Londoners can put their umbrellas away for a while.”

The Met Office said mainly settled conditions with “warm sunshine” would last for up to two weeks, until the end of September. Forecaster Helen Roberts said: “There will be sunny spells widely from Tuesday, with high pressure and a lot of tropical air being drawn up.

“It’s a definite change after an unsettled early September.”

Former BBC and Met Office forecaster John Hammond of weather-trending added: “Subtropical southerlies bring the prospect of fine, warm weather... before a downward trend in temperatures towards September 29.”

The record for the hottest late August Bank Holiday weekend was broken when temperatures reached 91.9F at Heathrow.
