MONARCHS OF THE GLEN
SOLHEIM CUP superstar Suzann Pettersen is retiring as there is no way to top her Gleneagles triumph.
The Norwegian sunk the winning putt amid dramatic scenes as Europe beat the USA 14.5-13.5
and immediately confirmed her retirement. Pettersen was a shock wild card after playing just two tournaments in two years following the birth of her son Herman.
But she justified captain Catriona Matthew’s pick in stunning style. Peterson said: “This is the perfect closure and the perfect end for my Solheim and professional career.
“It doesn’t get any better. I didn’t think I’d even be here until I met Beany [Matthew] four months ago.
“That’s me completely done. Now I know what it’s like to win as a mum, and I’ll leave it at that.”
Pettersen’s heroics on the
18th capped an incredible afternoon as
Europe halted recent US dominance in the Solheim.
Scot Matthew – who won three times as a player – led the side to victory on home soil in front of the biggest-ever crowds in the event.
Pettersen said: “I love my team-mates. If it wasn’t for these girls my putt wouldn’t have mattered. It was the ultimate scenario.” Europe started strong on the final day singles but the Americans took control and looked to have one hand on the trophy as the day wore on.
But the final three matches on the course proved to be crucial as Anna Nordqvist posted a point and Bronte Law managed to wrestle control of her clash with Ally McDonald to set the stage for Pettersen.
