GIRL,10, DIES AFTER BEING RUN OVER ON ‘RACETRACK’

-

A GIRL aged 10 mown down by a hit-and-run driver on a road described as a “racetrack” died in hospital yesterday.

She suffered devastating injuries when struck by the Renault Kangoo.

The driver stopped a short distance away on Wednesday before fleeing on foot.

Residents rushed to give first aid while waiting for an ambulance.

Northumbria Police said a 23-year-old man, believed to be the driver, has been arrested.

Chief Inspector Chris Grice said: “This is a horrific incident that robbed a family of their little girl. Our officers have been supporting her family and were with them when she passed away.”

Yvonne Sample, 67, said she saw flashing police lights soon after the horror in the Kenton area of Newcastle upon Tyne.

She said: “People are driving by really slowly today but only because there’s loads of police cars. Normally it’s like a racetrack. I’ve been saying for years that unless something is done someone will get really seriously injured. Unfortunately now it’s too late.” Farhad Rezaei, 45, said he rushed from his home when he heard the crash. He said: “I was one of the first people there and tried to help with CPR. I’ve not been able to sleep thinking about it.

Another resident added: “It’s horrific, everyone’s in shock.”

A second man, aged 23, was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and two women, aged 28 and 31, held on suspicion of perverting the course of justice remained in custody yesterday.
