Documentar­y: Inside The Vatican, BBC2, 9pm

The second of two programmes in which cameras record the inner workings of the Vatican over the course of a year. One of the most important tools of reform the Pope possesses is his power to appoint new cardinals. It’s the closest he gets to succession planning, because the cardinals will elect the new Pope at the next conclave. Here, Pope Francis selects 14 new cardinals, breaking with tradition by choosing men outside the centres of power. As the pontiff prepares to make a first papal visit to Ireland, the Church is rocked by a report alleging the cover-up of sex abuse by priests, dating back decades.

Entertainm­ent: The Great British Bake Off: An Extra Slice, C4, 8pm

Tuesday night saw the remaining bakers go back to the 1920s and here Jo Brand is joined by guests Tez Ilyas, Hugh Dennis and Natasia Demetriou to discuss who slipped up in the slapstick signature and whether there were tears over tiered cakes in the showstoppe­r. Plus, Tom Allen (left) serves up some of the bakes brought along by the studio audience. There are also outtakes from the main show and an interview with the latest baker to be eliminated.

Cole finds himself on the rebound after Natalie’s engagement, and his new romantic interest, Julie has an unexpected connection to Assistant District Attorney Erica, complicati­ng things at work. Meanwhile, Murtaugh worries about the connection between the murder he’s investigat­ing and a new opportunit­y for Trish to serve as co-counsel on a high-profile lawsuit alongside Leo Getz.

Comedy: Scarboroug­h, BBC1, 9.30pm

After a bit of gentle persuasion by Marion, Mike and Karen decide to move in together and go flat-hunting in the town. However, Mike’s promise to Karen that he’ll tell Bigsy that he’s moving out is proving difficult to deliver. Bigsy has other things on his mind though, namely Lisa Marie. Meanwhile, Geraldine admits to Karen that she’s feeling the strain. Catherine Tyldesley and Jason Manford (both above) star.

Film: The Martian, Film4, 9pm

A manned mission to Mars is abruptly abandoned, with one crew member left for dead. However, the astronaut has survived and faces a series of challenges – to contact Earth and arrange his rescue and to survive for the years it will take for a spacecraft to reach him on resources intended to last the crew a month. Ridley Scott’s sci-fi drama based on the novel by Andy Weir, starring Matt Damon (right), Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
