Knee op slows Sugar rush...for now

- By Sara Wallis

LORD Sugar is not a man who shows signs of slowing down, but now he has been forced to – after having knee replacement surgery.

But it seems even that is not going to keep the Apprentice judge off his feet for long. “I think it should take about a month to recover,” he says.

In fact, the 72-year-old tycoon wasted no time having the operation, heading there immediately after launching the 15th series of his hit show.

“I’m straight off to hospital now,” he said grinning as he rubbed his right knee.

Unsurprisingly, he has a brisk, business-like attitude towards the painful threehour procedure.

When his wife Ann had the same op at the end of 2017, Lord Sugar tweeted photos soon afterwards of her playing tennis and cycling with him on their tandem.

Lord Sugar had a heart scare a couple of years ago, when doctors diagnosed a blocked artery after he was out cycling with Ann in the United States.

“It was a blockage, it wasn’t heart failure,” he says. “I’m very, very fit for my age and have a good healthy diet and regular check-ups. I’m always on my bike, flying my aeroplane, playing tennis.”

Brilliant

Lord Sugar, who has been married to Ann for 51 years, also revealed that he is keen to do another five series.

“I’m only contracted to do one more, but I might do up to series 20. That’s a nice round figure. It’s up to the BBC.”

This series begins with a bang when the 16 candidates are told they are off to Cape Town in South Africa to sell and host tours.

“Seeing their faces when they found out was brilliant,” says Lord Sugar.

● The Apprentice starts tonight, BBC One, 9pm.
