Senior MP sent home over door staff row
A SENIOR Tory MP was ejected from the party’s annual conference yesterday after clashing with security staff.
Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown was sent home for an alleged row with door staff who blocked his wife from a side room for not having the right pass.
The incident led to the International Lounge being locked down for around 20 minutes.
The Cotswolds MP, who is treasurer of the 1922 Committee of backbench Tories, could now be disciplined by party chiefs.
Yesterday, a Tory spokesman described the incident as “totally unacceptable”.
He said: “Geoffrey has been asked to leave Conference and we are establishing all of the facts to see if further action is necessary.
Mortified
“We will always adopt a zero-tolerance approach to any inappropriate behaviour towards our hardworking staff.”
It is alleged chartered surveyor Sir Geoffrey, 66, an Old Etonian, “remonstrated” with staff.
Security personnel then intervened and police were called.
Sir Geoffrey last night told how he was “mortified” by the incident.
In a statement, he said: “This was a minor misunderstanding.
“The police have not contacted me at all.
“I am mortified that something so minor seems to have been blown out of all proportion and if anyone has been offended, I apologise unreservedly.
“I will co-operate with the party in any investigation.”
Greater Manchester Police said: “Security staff intervened and resolved the situation without any breach of security.”
