Critics should take it easy on McIlroy

TOUGHER COURSES ‘WOULD SUIT RORY’

- By Neil McLeman

RYDER CUP captain Padraig Harrington has defended Rory McIlroy following his European Tour blast.

The world No2 claimed the courses at the Dunhill Links were too easy after he finished tied 26th on Sunday. The fourtime Major winner then went on Instagram to claim tougher set-ups would boost Europe’s Ryder Cup chances.

Speaking in Wisconsin a year before the next match with the USA, Harrington said: “Rory has been the best player in the game for a number of years. “Clearly he wants the toughest set-up for his golf – he hits the ball a mile, he can break a golf course down just by hitting tee shots.” Only one Ryder Cup has been won by an away team since 2004 and Harrington added: “It’s probably not going to happen in my lifetime but 40, 50 years down the road it will probably be best to have a neutral set-up where there is no setting up a course as we did in Europe, so it was tight off the tee and where par was a good score.”
