Real Hobbit house comes with a £4.5m asking price
JRR Tolkien’s very own Hobbit hole is up for sale.
The home where he wrote the famous book and started The Lord Of The Rings is on the market for £4.5million.
The author lived at the six-bedroom home with his family from 1930 until 1947.
Tolkien is believed to have written his 1937 breakthrough novel,The Hobbit, in the drawing room of the large, detached house and then began The Lord Of The Rings.
The book is set within Tolkien’s richly imagined world of Middle Earth and follows the quest of home-loving “Hobbit” Bilbo Baggins to recover stolen treasure.
The diminutive Hobbits lived in Hobbit holes – beautifully recreated by Peter Jackson in his film trilogy.
The fantasy author’s house, in Northmoor Road in Oxford, has a blue plaque on an outside wall which states “J.R.R. Tolkien, Author of The Lord Of The Rings, Lived here 1930-1947”.
He was a professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford University at the time.
The property is priced at £4,575,000, and estate agents describe it as “an important part of Oxford’s history”.
The house was bought by a private buyer in 2004 for more than £1.5million. Despite having no special architectural qualities, it was given Grade II-listed status shortly afterwards on the basis of Prof Tolkien’s importance.
Estate agents Breckon and Breckon said it was “situated on a generous plot within a leafy central Oxford suburb”.
Tolkien died in 1973, but his works remain enormously popular.
