Historic local landmarks set to receive £700k boost

- By Macer Hall Political Editor

MINISTERS have set aside £700,000 to preserve some of England’s most historic buildings.

As part of a campaign to protect heritage sites across the country, people will be able to vote for the places they think deserve a slice of the cash.

The Government has asked local authorities to consult residents about buildings of significant historical and cultural value in their area.

Once the most popular sites have been identified, councils will be invited to submit their list to Government ministers.

Ten counties will then be chosen to receive a share of the £700,000 fund, and could see their local landmarks awarded listed status.

Buildings in the running for a cash boost include “Jumbo” – aVictorian water tower in Colchester, Essex – and historic George Street, in St Helens, Merseyside.

Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick – who announced the funding yesterday – said he would be contacting every parish council in England to ensure it is conserving the buildings that have played a remarkable role in local history but now need support.

Historic England, a public body set up by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, will also help promote the scheme.

Mr Jenrick said it would be “the most ambitious heritage preservation campaign for decades”.

He added: “This will empower local people to protect thousands of historic buildings and preserve them for future generations.” And Culture Secretary Nicky Morgan said: “Our built heritage is one of the things that make England a top tourist destination.

“It helps us attract millions of visitors every year who are keen to see the historic buildings at the heart of our communities, helping to boost our economy and make our towns and cities better places to live, work and visit.

“By encouraging more local listings, we will ensure that buildings are protected for future generations.”
