Babysitter Anita, 41, in no rush to be mum

- By Katie Begley

COUNTRYFILE presenter Anita Rani has hit back at the “constant buzz” around when she’s going to start a family.

The TV star, 41, says she’s repeatedly quizzed about whether she wants to have children with husband Bhupi Rehal but has yet to make up her mind.

Anita believes that women are put under too much pressure to enter motherhood and she won’t ever give in to social demands to start a family of her own until she’s ready.

She said: “I used to get questioned about when I was going to get a boyfriend, then it was whether I was going to get married, then it was whether I wanted a family.

“It’s just a constant buzz I’ve had my entire life, but I’ve managed to turn the volume right down because I’m exercising my freedom of choice.

“I recognise that I am from a long line of women who had no choice about their life, ever, so the day I choose to have a child or not, that’s my choice to make and everyone will know about it.”

Anita is one of four celebrities taking part in a new series called Famous Babysitter which sees them move into a family home for a week to look after children they’ve never met.

While the show gave Anita the chance to see what it’s like having kids, it has also put her childless life under the spotlight once more.

But she won’t give in to the pressure and added: “There are enough children to go around so if the odd woman doesn’t want to have one then it’s fine.

“I’m going to say something controversial now, but at 41 I don’t feel old. We are living longer these days and how I feel at 41 is no way how my grandmother or mother felt at this age.

“I just think everybody needs to relax a bit when it comes to children.”●
