1 Rheinhessen Pinot Noir 2017/18 (£8, 12.5%)
This refreshing pinot noir is light, fresh and fruity enough to satisfy any party palate. Flavours of red cherries and blackberries with some spicy hints of cinnamon and cloves. Perfect for serving with the hors d’oeuvres. Available from Sainsbury’s.
2 La Vieille Ferme Rouge (£7.75, 13.5%)
Another lovely fruity red from the slopes of Mont Ventoux in France’s southern Rhone region. A smooth wine with soft tannins, it’s an ideal party bottle and great value. If you’re eating, it’s the perfect accompaniment for red meat dishes. Available from the Co-op.
3 Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc (£9, 12.5%)
I’m a big fan of New Zealand wine and this sauvignon blanc is typically vibrant. Elegant and fresh, with glorious passion fruit and gooseberry flavours, it’s ideal for a Christmas party. Oyster Bay in Marlborough has led the charge for Kiwi sauvignon blanc and this wine is a lovely example. Available from Sainsbury’s and Asda.
4 Cono Sur Viognier (£7.50, 13.5%)
Another great wine to drink at a party, this Chilean viognier is awash with apricot, peach and citrus notes. It’s delicious on its own but will work with fish, curries and Chinese dishes if you’re serving food. It’s also carbon neutral (winemakers travel the estate on bicycles) if you want to parade your ‘woke’ credentials! Available from Tesco.
5 Campo Viejo Tempranillo (£8, 13.5%)
This rich, fruity wine from Spain’s glorious Rioja region is filled with ripe cherry and strawberry notes with a touch of vanilla, too. It’s an awardwinning wine and, like other Rioja wines, ageing in American oak barrels lends it a sweeter taste. Perfect with pasta and poultry. Available from Tesco.
6 Macon Villages 2018 (£9, 12.5%)
From sunny southern Burgundy, this luscious white is filled with the scent of fresh apple, lemon and peach. Perfect for pairing with smoked salmon appetisers to get the party going. Available from M&S.
