Plumber bringing warmth to the needy

- By Barnaby Kellaway

A PLUMBER praised after fixing a 91-year-old woman’s boiler for free has launched a campaign to help 1,000 more people this winter.

James Anderson hopes to raise £30,000 so he can offer his services to elderly and disabled people – free of charge.

It comes as Britain braces for the coldest winter in a decade.

James, 52, set up his not-forprofit plumbing firm Depher (Disabled and Elderly Plumbing and Heating Emergency Repair) in 2017.

He said: “Many elderly people struggle to pay their heating bills and, if their boiler goes, they might not be able to afford to get it fixed, meaning they are left freezing.

Vulnerable

“Last winter, over 50,000 people died because of the cold weather, and this year it is set to be even worse.

“I urge people to donate to our campaign so we can help as many vulnerable people as possible.”

James, from Burnley, has so far helped more than 2,000 families and elderly in need.

The company currently serves Lancashire, Manchester, Leeds, Nottingham and Scotland but James is keen to expand across the UK.

He said: “We would love to hear from any plumbers up and down the country who would like to join our scheme and volunteer their time.”

James’s plumbers give their labour for free but receive £30 to cover expenses.

If any additional paid work comes as a result, two per cent of the fee goes to Depher to be reinvested in the company.
