Corbyn is biggest threat to survival of Nato alliance

- Tim Newark Political commentator

AS world leaders gather in Britain this week to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Nato, it is not US President Donald Trump or even France’s President Emmanuel Macron that is the greatest security threat to its survival but Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

With his rampant anti-Americanism, his anti-nuclear stance and his sympathy towards Western enemies, if Corbyn ever got into power he would wreck our transatlantic alliance.

Just yesterday, leading military figures, including a former chief of the general staff, called on all party leaders to “reassure the British people of their firm commitment to strengthening Nato”. The problem for Corbyn is that his Marxist philosophy is implacably opposed to it.

When asked if he considered Nato our most successful military alliance, Corbyn replied: “I’m not sure I would define it as that.”

Further fence-sitting came when asked about backing our nuclear deterrent. “My view is that we have nuclear weapons,” he answered blandly, then admitted his was an “aspiration of a nuclear-free world”.

WHEN the French president called Nato “braindead”, Corbyn said Macron was “right to press the case for a change of direction in Nato”. It’s hardly a ringing endorsement and when the going gets tough, the Labour leader has been shown to prevaricate and side with anyone but Britain and her strongest allies.

This week five top military commanders cited recent examples of his failure in the face of international tension.

“When politics required decisive statements from Mr Corbyn over Russia’s murderous poisonings on UK soil and over the Iran tanker fiasco, they were not forthcoming,” said former commanders. “Mr Corbyn is a defence policy ditherer.” Worse than that, however, is that Corbyn is on record supporting our enemies, terrorists such as the IRA or radical Islamists. He couldn’t even bring himself to praise US Special Forces for cornering evil Isis leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, forcing him to blow himself up, saying the Americans should have arrested him.

With such outright animosity towards our strongest ally and biggest contributor to Nato, it is little wonder US intelligence would be loath to share any sensitive information with

Corbyn and his Marxist comrades for fear it would be passed to our enemies.

We would be cast adrift from our Western allies with only Russia, Iran, Cuba and Venezuela for friends.

Maybe that’s why it has been alleged that the leaking of US-UK trade documents, supposedly backing Corbyn’s ludicrous claims about the NHS being up for sale, has come from Russian hackers?

Certainly Russian leader Vladimir Putin would be rubbing his hands if Corbyn got into power, as it would emphatically undermine Nato. Iran would be delighted too, as Corbyn is no friend of Israel and opposes Trump’s sanctions against the greatest sponsor of terrorism in the Middle East.

On almost every international front, Corbyn takes the opposite view because in his heart and soul he is opposed to what he’s called Western imperialism and blames the US for all the ills in the world. His global view has not changed since it was first formed alongside other Marxists in the late 1960s and ’70s. For them the Soviet Union could do no wrong.

IN REALITY, of course, it is Nato that has kept the peace in Europe since the Second World War. And it was US commitment to Nato that kept Russia out of Western Europe during the Cold War, and stands up toVladimir Putin.

Much as President Macron might prefer to see an EU army raised to combat this threat, it would only fuel transatlantic tension and not dissuade anyone like Putin who supplies most of the natural gas to Western Europe anyway.

In contrast, President Trump is right to question the level of financial support for Nato coming from rich nations such as Germany. Why should the Germans get away with paying less than the required two per cent of GDP?

Trump stands full-square behind his leading Nato ally Britain, knowing we will come to his country’s aid if needed. But all that would change if Corbyn walks into No 10 Downing Street.

Long may the transatlantic friendship thrive! Happy birthday to Nato but assumptions of such mutual benefit cannot be taken for granted. We’ve enjoyed 70 years of peace under its umbrella, but it takes only one recalcitrant leader to unravel that alliance and that malevolent figure could well be the Marxist Corbyn. We can’t say we haven’t been warned.
