I WOULD WATCH THE KIDS EAT BUT GO HUNGRY MYSELF

- By Frances Millar

MOTHER-of-four Leanne and her partner both work, but they still struggle to put food on the table.

The 34-year-old said: “After my third was old enough, I got myself a 13-hour contract job at night.

“My partner was in full-time work and I was part-time, I was so optimistic, and I just thought ‘we are going to be so happy now’. But then all the bills came in. Despite us both having an income, we had less than ever. I remember saying we can’t afford to work.”

Leanne added: “I would just sit in all day and cry.

“There were times I’d make the kids food and just watch them because if I ate, I didn’t know if I would be able to get more food for the next day.”

After contacting Action For Children she was directed to a local food bank in Glasgow.

It is thanks to her mother that the family will get a proper Christmas lunch.

“But if she didn’t, we wouldn’t be having one,” said Leanne. “It would be another night of pasta or hot dogs.”

THIS week’s high-profile falling out between Donald Trump and Canadian PM Justin Trudeau, caused after the latter was heard mocking the US President during the Nato summit, reminds me of the pair’s past handshake tussles.

Having long prided himself on his physical prowess, fitness fanatic Trudeau, 47, refuses to fall victim to the trademark “grip and yank” handshake Trump regularly employs when asserting dominance over fellow leaders.

Keen to take a firm hold of The Donald, 73, on such occasions, Trudeau is never known to have come off second best yet…
