END OF THE ROAD

Silva sacked Ferguson in charge and Moyes waits in the wings

- By David Maddock

MARCO SILVA was finally sacked last night and Everton will spend the weekend in negotiations with a potential new manager after placing Duncan Ferguson in temporary charge. David Moyes is the odds-on favourite to make a return to Goodison Park but the Everton board have indicated they need more time to conduct delicate negotiations with another candidate.

Owner Farhad Moshiri travelled to the club’s training ground yesterday to tell Silva in person he had been sacked, and he was joined by the

rest of the five-person board to discuss a replacement.

Informal discussions have been held with Moyes, below, who enjoyed a successful 11-year reign at Goodison before leaving for Manchester United.

But it is understood there is at least one more target on the list – and Ferguson has been made caretaker-boss to allow more time to pursue negotiations.

The club are hoping for more talks this weekend as the club takes on Chelsea tomorrow lunchtime under Ferguson’s guidance.

Everton have been linked with Manchester City coach Mikel Arteta and River Plate manager Marcelo Gallardo, while Moshiri has been a long time admirer of the Ajax boss Erik ten Hag.

The Merseyside club have previously approached the former Valencia manager Marcelino, but it is reported he politely declined their interest.

As for Silva, Moshiri made the decision to sack Silva 11 days ago following a catastrophic home defeat by bottom club Norwich. The 5-2 Anfield derby defeat on Wednesday was the final straw.
