Onomah’s winner can breathe new life into Fulham

ROUND-UP

- SHEFF WED v BRISTOL HECTOR NUNNS

JOSH ONOMAH says claiming the prized scalp of Leeds can reignite Fulham’s promotion bid.

The 22-year-old midfielder, who was a makeweight in Ryan Sessegnon’s move to Tottenham last summer, scored his first goal for Fulham to secure a 2-1 victory.

Onomah was at Spurs from the age of seven and was coached there as a 15-year-old by Cottagers manager Scott Parker.

“It was a must-win game for us,” said Onomah. “The gaffer told us he knew what we were capable of and he wanted to see us put that together with effort and character.

“It was a really important day for Fulham.”

Darnell Furlong says leaders West Brom will not do a Leeds and collapse.

The Baggies drew 1-1 with Brentford and will be on top at Christmas.

Promotion looks stitched on, but then it did for Leeds as the carols were being sung 12 months ago.

Visitors Brentford dominated and should have been ahead before Henrik Dalsgaard scored in the 43rd minute.

Furlong’s header just before the break saved West Brom.

He said: “Leeds were top a year ago and didn’t go up. That’s the perfect example for us.

“We can say, ‘Look what happened last season’. We will do all we can now to keep out in front.”

After Derby lost 3-0 at Reading, Rams manager Phillip Cocu said he cannot wait for Wayne Rooney to start playing for his side.

Goals have been the problem with just three in eight games.

Expectation now falls on Rooney, who will be able to take the field next month.

“Somebody who can find the net is very welcome because we struggle scoring goals and I cannot change it,” said Cocu.

“It’s quality but it’s also maybe pressure of players in the team.

“I want him in as soon as possible. That is why I am sad he couldn’t play, because we need to build up the physical part of the game.”
