THIS was the apprentice outwitting the master.

And Frank Lampard’s team of supposedly inexperienced young stars keeping their cool and getting the job done maturely and without fuss.

At the same time, it was all of Tottenham’s demons spilling out as though it were Stamford Bridge in May 2016 again – the night their ill-discipline handed Leicester the title.

Even the mild-mannered Son Heung-Min fell victim to a tantrum, kicking out as he fell under challenge from Antonio Rudiger to earn a red card.

Spurs fans also did nothing to help themselves, with audible racism from one corner of the ground leading to three announcements condemning the behaviour.

The public address calls were made at referee Anthony Taylor’s instigation. A full investigation and a lifetime ban for those involved may follow.

From his mime, Chelsea’s Rudiger was in no doubt he heard monkey chanting.

But the darkest day in Spurs’ new stadium – more damaging than shipping seven goals against Bayern Munich – should not overshadow Lampard’s joy.

The day’s defining image was the sight of the Chelsea boss punching the air, bellowing and jumping up and down on the touchline to celebrate the second goal. In the background, new Spurs manager Jose Mourinho was skulking down the tunnel early for half-time.

In a brave experiment, Lampard arrived to face his

DUNCAN FERGUSON says he and the Everton players are in awe of Carlo Ancelotti.

The Italian is Everton’s new manager on a fourand-a-half year deal and Ferguson says everyone is blown away by him.

The caretaker boss said the club had made a huge statement in appointing three-time Champions League winner Ancelotti.

“Absolutely he’s got a presence,” said Ferguson,

4, 9. who will be one of Ancelotti’s assistants. “Everyone knows he’s a winner.

“He’s got so many medals hasn’t he? We’re in awe of him really. We’ll go on Monday and we’ll go with everything we’ve got.

“It’s an incredible appointment, isn’t it? One of the biggest names in football ever is at our football club. It’s an incredible statement, fantastic, and it just shows you how ambitious we are.

“I’ve had a word with him and I can’t wait to start learning from him on Monday.”

Ancelotti watched Saturday’s game from the stands, and Gylfi Sigurdsson said the Italian’s arrival underlined the ambition of majority shareholder

Farhad Moshiri and the club board. “That’s down to the chairman and the owner,” he said.

“They love this club and they are always looking to improve it and the team, so it is great credit to them to bring in someone of his stature.

“They wanted to bring in the best manager possible – and they have got a very good manager with a lot of experience.”
