Time to right this bong and let Big Ben chime!

THE ridiculous lengths that Remainers on the House of Commons Commission have gone to in their bid to prevent Big Ben chiming the moment Britain finally leaves the EU is an insult to the nation. Like London Mayor Sadiq Khan’s decision to ban fireworks from the Brexit party in Parliament Square, this is a case of sore losers. Khan has never refused anything from his Remainer friends.

With Big Ben’s bongs we have had a bizarre series of excuses. First, it would cost more than £500,000 even though we now know that it would cost much less. Then when the public raises the money the Parliamentary authorities say they cannot accept it.

The claim being made by Remainers is that Big Ben chiming is somehow divisive and fails to help the nation heal.

It is true that the nation needs healing but this is mostly as a result of the anxiety and damage to democracy done by Remainers in Parliament who spent more than three years trying to frustrate the biggest democratic mandate in British history.

Brexiteers do not want to rub the noses of Remainers in it as we leave the EU.We indeed want the country to come together and heal.

However, the moment Britain leaves the EU is a big political moment that needs to be marked properly.

Big Ben chiming is an appropriate way for that to happen. It is not exactly wild celebrations, it is simply a symbol for the nation.

This issue is a bit like Brexit itself, let’s just get this done. It is not beyond the wit of man or woman to do this.
