PICKS OF THE DAY
Cookery: Crazy Delicious, C4, 8pm
Any programme that is widely described as a “bizarre cooking contest” is worth a watch on a cold and dark Tuesday night. We obviously expected nothing less from Heston Blumenthal. Jayde Adams (left) presents, with astrophysics enthusiast Harry, flavour maverick Elainea and Italian dessert specialist Gabi taking up the challenge to create new twists on classic dishes. The first two challenges see them pushed to come up with a unique recipe involving apples and their own take on spaghetti bolognese. After the first two challenges, one contestant will be eliminated and the remaining two must prepare brunch for Blumenthal, Niklas Ekstedt and Carla Hall.
History: Belsen: Our Story, BBC2, 9pm
Documentary exploring the concentration camp, featuring personal accounts from the few remaining survivors and archive footage shot by the British forces that liberated them. BergenBelsen was used to hold prisoners evacuated from camps that had fallen to the Allied advance, leading its population to reach almost 60,000 by late 1944. Thousands died at the camp from starvation and disease, their bodies left unburied. Mala Tribich (left) is among the contributors.
Film: Star Trek Into Darkness, Film4, 6.20pm
Captain Kirk and the crew of the Starship Enterprise are sent on a clandestine mission into enemy territory to track down the rogue Starfleet agent behind a terrorist attack on Earth. However, the assignment brings to light a hidden threat from within their own organisation. Sci-fi adventure sequel, starring Chris Pine as Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock (both above), alongside Benedict Cumberbatch.
Animals: Dogs Behaving (Very) Badly, Channel 5, 8pm
If the NTAs are not your cup of tea then checking in with Graeme Hall and some naughty pups might well be. Tonight he arrives in Leeds where English bulldog Wilson’s destructive behaviour is leaving his owner Nichola (above, with Graeme and Wilson) considering having him rehomed. Realising that this bolshie bulldog’s behaviour is all for attention, Graeme sets about turning it around.
Politics: Europe: Them Or Us? BBC4, 9pm & 10pm
Split into two parts – but broadcast one after the other – Nick Robinson (right) has some serious questions about Europe. The broadcaster asks whether Europe means “us” or “them” in a programme that is claiming to be impartial. Robinson examines the history of the UK’s relationship with Europe. How did we get from the Common Market, which our politicians first rejected and then became keen to embrace, to the fraught to-and-fro of the EU?
