Low skills don’t work for Britain

-

IN JUST a couple of months Priti Patel has radically overhauled our immigration system with a policy that works in OUR interests NOT the EU’s. She has done just what people voted for in the 2016 referendum with a points system that doesn’t just take back control of our borders but means we get as much out of people coming here as they get out of us.

From now on we get to choose from the ranks of the brightest and the best who come to live and work here. And in future people will have to have a job offer, earn £25,000 a year and be able to speak English. There will be no cap on skilled workers and those with PHDs in science, engineering and maths will be positively encouraged to come. Extra points will be awarded to those in professions where we have shortages and people using our NHS will now also have to contribute.

We can also ban foreign criminals and no one coming here can claim benefits for five years. It all makes total sense yet I can’t imagine any other Government having the guts to do it for fear of being called racists and Little Englanders.

Of course the Left are already screaming it’s madness, that the NHS will have even fewer nurses and the social care system will collapse, not understanding that only 6.4 per cent of our nurses and just 8 per cent of care workers come from the EU.

But the point is that for years care work has been undervalued and underpaid. That needs to change and when it does plenty of people will want to do it. And with 3.2 million EU immigrants ready to settle here, I don’t see any immediate problem.

And, yes, big businesses are panicking because they’ll no longer be able to pay people from the

EU slave wages. And it’s precisely because of that cheap labour they’ve been able to avoid investing in new technologies. That too must change.

The Labour Party whines that this wage threshold will push many companies under, forgetting that these were precisely the same arguments used by the Tories to oppose the minimum wage. It didn’t wash then and it won’t wash now. Companies that have been coining it for years thanks to slave labour will now have to start paying people a proper wage and training up British-born people.

And yes, the Government has to help not just in reviving the British workforce with incentives and opportunities but by getting the 800,000 young people currently not in work off their backsides and into apprenticeships and training schemes. And it must be made clear to these young people that the “this job is too menial for me”, attitude won’t fly. Every ladder has a bottom rung and that’s where anyone who’s made a success of their life started.Young people need to be shown that all jobs, no matter how lowly at the beginning, can be the path to success.

We’re a self-governing country now and the people who come here to work from wherever must have the skills and talents that will benefit us on our journey into independence.

England is the most densely populated country in Europe. It’s no longer feasible to have huge numbers of low-skilled or unskilled people coming here at the rate they have been – almost a million every three years – because our public services just can’t take it.

We already have enough labourers, car washers and sandwich makers. Time to draft in doctors, scientists and tech people. We have to be selfish now. It’s OUR time! ■ GWYNETH Paltrow hosted a dinner party for lots of her celebrity pals and asked them all to come without make-up. Kate Hudson, Demi Moore, Rumer Willis and Alexandra Grant were among the guests. So, a bunch of Hollywood’s most beautiful women have dinner without their slap on and we’re supposed to hail them as heroines, innovators, trail blazers? These girls need to find themselves a REAL cause because eating salad without your make-up on doesn’t count.

I COULD only bear to watch the Brit Awards for 10 minutes before wanting to put my foot through the telly. I was beyond irritated by the Woke Brigade moaning how not enough women had been nominated for awards. Has it ever occurred to these numpties that maybe, this year, the women just didn’t cut the mustard in terms of outstanding work? The only thing the Brits – in fact any awards – should be about is talent. Trying to influence the outcome on the basis of gender demeans the awards AND the artists. Any self-respecting female musician would rightly feel patronised and humiliated being nominated just to make up the gender diversity quota.

PRINCE ANDREW’S former girlfriend Caroline Stanbury – who’s a bit of a spoiled Madam if you’ve ever watched Ladies of London – has just split from her husband of 15 years, Turkish financier Cem Habib. “Why does it have to be such a negative?” asks Caroline. “We’ve had a very successful marriage.” And it’s likely to be an even more successful divorce as Cem’s worth about £50million. Just saying…
