A very welcome boost to the North of England

-

THE news that the new Chancellor of the Exchequer is planning to move a significant number of the Treasury’s 1,500 posts to the North of England could scarcely be more welcome.

Rishi Sunak has shown that he understands the importance of building on the Conservative Party’s newfound support in the North, as well as rebalancing the relationship between North and South. Both parts of the country are equally important, but the South-east has been allowed to become far too dominant in recent decades and it is high time this was made a priority.

The further news that £70billion is to be spent on northern infrastructure products is equally welcome and a sign that this is proving to be a truly radical regime. The Prime Minister and his party were elected on the back of the slogan “Get Brexit Done”, but their remit goes much further than that.

Because of Brexit, Britain stands on the verge of a huge change in our society and this is the ideal time to implement other important reforms. If Boris and his cohorts continue along these lines, they will be in power for generations to come.

Meanwhile Labour lags behind, navelgazing, failing utterly to learn any of the lessons of the past decade and turning into a greater irrelevance by the day.

Much as we support the PM and his initiatives, it is not healthy to have such a supine Opposition. But we fear it will be a very long time before Labour revives again.
