There is no clinical evidence to support claims that copper can help people with arthritis but it is a popular alternative therapy for the chronic pain many endure.

Dr Wendy Holden, Arthritis Action’s medical adviser, said: “Many people with arthritis wear copper to try to help with the stiffness and pain.

“There is no evidence copper works, only hearsay, or that lack of copper in our bodies causes arthritis but it doesn’t cause any harm.

“Also, if some people feel because of it then that’s news for them – even if it is to better great just a placebo effect.” Phil says he is just happy to be pain-free but is in no doubt the arthritis is a legacy of his career playing at the highest level of football.

He played for Spurs for eight years under Bill Nicholson and his successor Keith Burkinshaw and also had spells at Bournemouth and Brentford. He also coached and managed Brentford.

A WOMAN who quit in protest after her care home boss refused to give a £52,000-a-year job to a woman because she was black has won an employment tribunal.

Secretary Caroline Hobbs, 55, walked out after managing director Cristina Bila, 61, discovered Paulett Mills was being considered for the position of care home manager.

Mrs Hobbs told the tribunal: “She knew it was wrong because she told me this wasn’t for public knowledge.”

Bristol Employment Tribunal ruled in favour of Mrs Hobbs after she sued Bila’s company, Avon Care Homes Ltd, for constructive dismissal over the position at Pondsmead nursing home in Radstock, Somerset.

Bila was reported to have said: “To have black people in charge of a home like that is not going to work. I am not having her as a manager.”

Mrs Hobbs is set for a payout at a later date. Avon Care Homes Ltd and Bila refused to comment.
