My bumper 14lb twins are a double delight...

- By Lucy Laing

TWINS India and Evie topped 14lb between them at birth, making them one of the heaviest pair born naturally in the UK.

Mum Kathryn Fincher said the pair, who have celebrated their first birthday, were so big they didn’t look as if they had just been born.

Kathryn said her pregnancy went smoothly but she and husband Tim got a shock during a 30-week scan when doctors said they had already reached 6lb each.

Thrilled

The average weight of a twin at birth is 5lb.

“That was a shock,” said Kathryn. “I hadn’t expected them to be that big already.”

Kathryn, 36, who lives in Worcester with Tim, 36, a builder, and daughter Phoebe, three, was thrilled to find out she was expecting twins.

She said: “We weren’t

expecting that it was going to be twins, but when the sonographer told us there were two heartbeats we weren’t totally surprised because there are several sets of twins already in our families.

“I had already decided I wanted to have a natural birth as the thought of a caesarean terrifies me.

“My bump was so huge, too. I could hardly stand up and talk at the same time, I was so out of breath. I looked like Mr Greedy from the Mr Men.

“I even posted a photo of myself on Instagram next to a photograph of Mr Greedy.”

Swimming teacher Kathryn went into labour at 37 weeks and after 14 hours of labour, the twins arrived within 30 minutes of each other – India weighing 6lb 6oz, and Evie 7lb 11oz.

Kathryn said: “It was a relief when they arrived safely but I couldn’t believe they were so big. They didn’t look like newborn babies at all.

“I had bought lots of newborn clothes, so we had to discard all those and buy bigger sizes.

“They did so well as soon as they were born we were allowed to bring them home.”

Proud

And the twins have gone from strength to strength.

“They’ve just celebrated their first birthday, and they are doing so well,” said Kathryn. “We are very proud of them.”

Britain’s largest mixedsex twins were born in Lancashire in 2007 to Beth Ryder, at a combined weight of 18lb 2oz.

The world’s heaviest weighed a total of

27lb 12oz.

They were born to Mary Ann Ward Haskin in the US in 1924.
