PICKS OF THE DAY

-

Travel: Celebrity Britain By Barge: Then & Now, Channel 5, 8.30pm

Will they ever run out of celebrities to put on boats of one description or another to film travelling around Britain? We do hope not. On the second part of the Scottish leg, Pete Waterman, Jennie Bond, Anne Diamond and Bill Oddie, (all left) join the Glasgow and Edinburgh Union Canal rising lock, stock and barge up the Falkirk wheel before heading east. Anne and Jennie encounter the ghost of William Burke – of Burke and Hare fame – as they travel through the Falkirk tunnel which he helped build as an Irish navvy. Pete goes digging for industrial treasure at an old railway terminus and Bill gets to look down on the birds for once.

Comedy: The Last Leg, C4, 10pm

This could be interesting, very interesting. Adam Hills, Josh Widdicombe and Alex Brooker (left) are used to having controversial figures from the world of politics joining them on The Last Leg but we think sparks could really fly tonight when they welcome former Speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow, to the studio to paw over the last seven days’ events and poke fun at the figures behind the news. Expect #isitokay to direct the quartet as the show progresses.

Soap: EastEnders, BBC1, 8.30pm

Shirley grows suspicious of Suki’s behaviour and speaks to Jean, leading to an argument. As Gray (Toby Alexander-Smith, above right) and Kush set off for court, the solicitor subtly sows seeds of doubt in his client’s mind about the plea. Then, as Whitney’s bail hearing gets under way, Gray feels the pressure to deliver. But as tensions boil over, Whitney (Shona McGarty, above left) struggles to keep her cool.

Cookery: MasterChef, BBC1, 7.30pm

Of all the previous MasterChef contestants who return to pass judgment on the current batch we probably like Dhruv Baker the best. The 2010 winner is back tonight along with Alex Rushmer and Dr Tim Kinnaird. Six contestants battle through the Signature Dish round before four then take the ingredients challenge ahead of cooking for the high-profile trio. John Torode and Gregg Wallace (both above) host.

Film: Con Air, Channel 5, 9.45pm

Newly-released prisoner Cameron Poe catches a ride home on a maximum-security flight conveying some of America’s deadliest criminals. When they hijack the plane in mid-flight, led by criminal mastermind Cyrus the Virus, Poe, a former Army Ranger sergeant, is forced to intervene. Meanwhile, US marshal Vince Larkin has an ongoing battle on the ground to prevent the plane from being blown to pieces. Action thriller with Nicolas Cage (right).
