You clever sausage! Dachshund wins Crufts

- By Dan Townend

A SAUSAGE dog called Maisie won Crufts last night – and the promise she can now sleep on her owner’s bed.

The giant silver trophy towered over the wire-haired dachshund after she beat off thousands of dogs to be named Best in Show.

Owner Kim McCalmont, who fell in love with the breed after seeing dachshunds at a Crufts show, said: “It’s the sort of thing you dream of when you are preparing the dogs’ coats.

“We were up so early this morning. She is so excited. She did sleep on the bed last night. She will never come off it now.”

Two-year-old Maisie – real name Silvae Trademark – won the Hound category earlier in the show.

But she let her owners down when she had an “accident” on her lap of honour of the arena – and Kim had to pick it up with a poo bag. Reserve best in show was black poodle Frankie, who earlier won the Utility category.

But he tried to steal the show by jumping on to the plinth as Maisie was awarded the top prize.

Owner Melanie Harwood, who also came second in 2017 with Frankie, said: “I am so proud of him. I am happy.”

The other finalists were Pixie the Kerry blue terrier, Pablo the bichon frise, Elsie the Irish setter, who was the oldest competitor, Drago the bull mastiff and Zokni the old English sheepdog.

Over the past four days about 28,000 pooches have been put through their paces at the biggest dog show in the world at Birmingham’s NEC.

Maisie received a replica of the Keddall Memorial Trophy – named after show manager for 30 years Robert Keddall – and a cash prize of £100.
