No shakes for rattled rock ‘ n’ royal Charles
Matt as cake- obsessed Marjorie
WELCOME to my royal do, Ron, Ron Ron...
Prince Charles met star supporters including Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood, 72, yesterday – but avoided handshakes because of coronavirus fears.
Charles, 71, also exchanged the traditional Indian namaste gesture with Ant and Dec.
At one point he extended his hand to a guest before hastily withdrawing it in mock horror and bowing instead.
He was hosting his annual Prince’s Trust Awards to recognise young people who succeed against the odds.
It was two days after he took similar precautions at Westminster Abbey for the Commonwealth Service.
Charles used his speech to thank backers who could not be there because of Covid- 19.
And, in a pop at the number of gongs won by his co- hosts Ant and Dec, he quipped: “They recently won their 19th National Television Award. It is a little bit refreshing for them to be handing out awards rather than receiving them for a change.” Other guests included actors Pierce Brosnan, James Norton, Anna Friel, Olympian Dina Asher- Smith and singer Craig David. Richard E Grant wore black gloves and elbow- bumped friends. Ant and Dec joked about the trend for panic- buying loo paper.
Ant quipped that winners would take home “a holiday, new car and lifetime’s supply of toilet roll”. Dec replied: “No, that’s the other show, that’s Saturday Night Takeaway. This is the Prince’s Trust.”
Ant said: “Oh, I get those mixed up. Although we had big cheers on the free toilet roll.”
