Charles back at desk after cheer from wellwishers

- By Richard Palmer Royal Correspondent

PRINCE Charles has received hundreds of get well soon messages after contracting coronavirus – but was back at his desk working yesterday.

Clarence House officials said the heir to the throne was holding meetings by phone from his Highland hideaway at Birkhall on the Balmoral estate.

Charles, 71, is following other members of the Royal Family who are using a combination of video conferencing and calls to carry out royal duties.

He is self-isolating while his wife the Duchess of Cornwall is living in a separate part of the property for 14 days after she tested negative for Covid-19.

A spokesman declined to give an update on Charles’ health status after it was announced on Wednesday that he had tested positive for coronavirus. He took the test on Monday and got the result on Tuesday.

But the spokesman said the Prince was working at his desk as usual and had received hundreds of get well soon wishes sent to him at Clarence House – a mixture of cards, but mostly digital messages.

Dr Catherine Calderwood, Chief Medical Officer for Scotland, hinted that Charles and Camilla, 72, may have undergone the tests because of underlying medical conditions.

She said: “I have spoken to the team in Grampian who were looking after the individual.

“My understanding is there were very good reasons for that person and his wife to be tested, and obviously I wouldn’t be able to disclose anything else that I know because of patient confidentiality.”

Prince Albert of Monaco, 62, who announced on March 16 he had Covid-19, has laughed off suggestions he might have given Charles the virus at a conference on climate change in London on March 10.
