Julie's easy exercises to stay fit at home
THE Daily Express is bringing you a daily exercise from awardwinning fitness coach, Julie Bartlett, while you’re stuck at home.
You may be feeling tired and sluggish but it’s important to get your body moving to enhance mental and physical health.
These exercises are especially suitable for older readers and are designed to be carried out at home with no specialist equipment.
Julie, who runs health and wellness workshops for John Lewis in Bluewater shopping centre and Mazda Cars, says: “Instead of fancy equipment and gym kit, just pull on something loose and comfortable. Grab two tins or two plastic bottles filled with liquid and a stretchy pair of old tights or a resistance band.
“Listen to your body and do what feels right. If you want to make it harder, then make your movements bigger or do some more repetitions.
“If you need to make it easier, do less and build up. And always remember to warm up and cool down with gentle stretches.”
DAY 5 SEATED CUSHION SQUEEZE
This simple but effective exercise works your core muscles, helping to strengthen your tummy and back muscles. Aim to repeat eight times.
1
Sit comfortably on the edge of your sofa or a chair, with a cushion placed between your thighs. Take a deep breath in through your nose, expanding your rib cage and your tummy.
2
Breathe out through your mouth and draw your navel back towards your spine as you squeeze the cushion between your legs. Try to engage your pelvic floor muscles, switching them on as if you were going to the loo and wanted to restrict the flow of urine.
3
Relax your legs and breathe normally before repeating the exercise.
