CORONAVIRUS has left us all more diligent about washing our hands but the constant exposure to oilstripping soap and hot water, along with alcohol-based hand sanitiser can leave hands dry, red and irritated.

For people with skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis, the extended washing routine can make issues worse. But with a few simple steps you can restore your hand health while staying safe.

COOL DOWN

Hot water can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and cracks, so always use lukewarm water.Washing hands with soap is much kinder than using a hand gel and more effective than most sanitisers.

If you have sensitive or inflamed skin, avoid common irritants such as sodium laureth sulphate (SLS).

Use an unscented soap with hydrating ingredients such as glycerin, as well as ceramides, shea butter and coconut oil. Soothing ingredients such as aloe vera, chamomile and green tea can also decrease inflammation and irritation. After you’ve washed your hands pat them dry, rather than rubbing.

Always use hand cream after washing as it will act as a barrier and seal in moisture.

The skin is able to absorb the most moisture during the first few minutes after washing hands, although if you are using an alcohol-based hand sanitiser, wait a few minutes to prevent diluting the impact of the ingredients.

Choose a thick, creamy formula and avoid ingredients such as parabens, alcohols and silicones as these can irritate. Look for ingredients such as oatmeal (good for soothing itchy skin and eczema) emollients and hydrators such as glycerin, ceramides, vitamin E and shea butter or hyaluronic acid to help your skin retain its natural moisture. Once a week, try an intensive hand mask.
