SIMULATION HAS GOT THE PUNTERS ALL A-FLUTTER

-

THE world’s greatest steeplechase is off today but you can still have a flutter – on the Virtual Grand National.

Bookmakers and computer analysts have picked the 40 runners that would most likely have lined up, adding CGI technology and special algorithms.

The four-mile, 30-fence virtual race will be broadcast by ITV, as usual, from 5pm with bookmakers’ profits going to NHS Charities Together.

A maximum bet of £10 win per horse, or £10 each way, will be allowed, said the Betting and Gaming Council. The virtual race has been created by Carm Productions with workers signing non-disclosure agreements to keep the winner secret until the race finishes. Executive producer Rob McLoughlin said: “We use the latest CGI technology and algorithms and had been ready to go ahead as a forerunner to the big race. We want to cheer the nation up.”

The initiative has the backing of big gambling firms including Bet365, William Hill and Betfred.

Had the real Grand National gone ahead this weekend, Tiger Roll was hotly tipped for an unprecedented third consecutive win.

Ladbrokes said Definitly Red has been the most popular selection for the Virtual Grand National at 14/1 – although is not the bookies favourite. That still lies with the 2019 and 2018 winner Tiger Roll, who was on

5/1 yesterday.

Nicola McGeady of Ladbrokes said: “With all profits going to the NHS, it is wonderful to see so many embrace the fun of the Virtual Grand National.

“Manchester United and Liverpool fans haven’t wasted any time in backing Definitly Red but as expected Tiger Roll fans are out in force.”

By midday yesterday, William Hill had taken more than 27,000 bets.

NHS Charities Together represents more than 140 charities raising around £1million a day.
