THE shutdown of Britain is liberating our wildlife. As humans retreat indoors, taking their dogs with them, moles are emerging above ground, oystercatchers are nesting on deserted beaches and wildflowers that are normally trodden underfoot on pavements are blooming.

Wild goats have invaded the deserted seaside town of Llandudno and wild deer have been spotted grazing on an East London housing estate.

Up and down the country, people with more time on their hands are discovering the delights of their immediate environs.

“There are lots of ways to connect with nature, whether you have a garden in the countryside or a city centre flat,” says Leanne Manchester of The Wildlife Trusts. “Where possible, get outdoors into your garden or for your daily exercise – this is really important to improve your health and wellbeing.

“Spring is a beautiful time in the natural world, full of buzzing bees, brimming with beautiful birdsong and full of new life.”

Jon Traill, Living Landscapes Manager at Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, says: “Even the tiniest space can support a range of species. A pile of leaves by the back yard wall will have spiders, millipedes and woodlice living on and in it. These may provide food for garden birds or, if you are lucky enough, a hedgehog. You don’t need anywhere special to watch your garden wildlife either. Sit for half an hour and look out of the window or use your garden shed as a makeshift hide.

“Don’t forget to put some water out for the animals to drink. Even a saucer-sized bowl will prove welcome for all your garden visitors.”

No matter where you live, there is plenty to see. Here is our guide to getting the most out of nature.
