Countdown to disaster... Maths whizz Carol says she’s a flop at Bake Off

- By Giles Sheldrick Chief Reporter ●

BRAINBOX Carol Vorderman has the midas touch, with everything she does turning to gold – except when it comes to knocking up a cake, she has revealed.

The former Countdown numbers whizz told fans they will not learn a single thing tonight as she tackles her biggest challenge yet – baking.

Carol, 59, whose passions include flying light aircraft, astrophysics and hill walking, revealed she was a flop on the Great British Bake Off.

Viewers will see her join Judge Robert Rinder, model and presenter Kelly Brook and comedian Mo Gilligan in the famous white tent for a charity special.

The fantastic foursome are the latest batch of cooking celebrities to take part in the Stand Up To Cancer showpiece.

They will be tasked with making a signature sandwich biscuit, a sweet bread-based treat and a phenomenal cake showstopper.

Well, that’s what the brief says. According to Carol, none of them rose to the challenge and viewers should not have high hopes of picking up any culinary tips from the four flops.

She said: “Please do not expect to learn anything from us on the cooking front. By the way the Judge and I are now engaged (it’s a long story).”

Overwhelmed

As always, their creations will be tasted and judged by acid-tongued bread maker Paul Hollywood, 54, and Prue Leith, 80, but little mercy is shown.

Judge Rinder, 41, told the Daily Express his efforts reduced Paul to tears – and not in a good way.

He said: “I am to baking what Jackson Pollock was to art; clearly a genius but misunderstood in his time. Paul Hollywood was clearly overwhelmed.”

The foursome are the latest batch of 20 celebrities to take on the challenge for Stand Up To Cancer, a joint initiative between Cancer Research UK and Channel 4.

Last week viewers saw The One Show host Alex Jones have a nightmare in the kitchen when she sliced open her hand and needed stitches.

The fundraiser launched in 2012 and has since raised £62million to fund 52 important trials and projects involving 11,000 cancer patients across the UK.
