THE VIRUS IN BRIEF

-

FITNESS guru Joe Wicks has revealed his online PE classes have raised £200,000 for the NHS.

Home after surgery on his hand due to a bike fall Joe, 33, below, told Good Morning Britain hosts Susanna Reid and Ben Shephard: “I was treated by someone from Scotland, Ireland, Iran, Jamaica, Philippines,

Sri Lanka.

“The NHS isn’t just a service. It’s a community of people who are out there helping other people.

“It doesn’t matter if you walk in the richest man on earth or the poorest in town, they love you, they take care of you, they make you feel safe.”

AIRPORT social distancing would see more than half-mile queues for each jumbo jet, Heathrow’s chief executive warned.

John Holland-Kaye said major international hubs did not have enough space for post-lockdown social distancing to be a safe solution.

He also warned that social distancing on planes would slash their capacity by more than half and prices would shoot up.

Mr Holland-Kaye said: “Forget social distancing – it won’t work in aviation or any other form of public transport – and the problem is not the plane, it is the lack of space in the airport.

“Just one jumbo jet would require a queue a kilometre long.”

LOCKED down home workers are spending £63million a month more on extra energy.

Powering kettle for brews and a microwave for heating lunch costs £5.04 per month – based on working an eight-hour day for Britain’s 12.5 home workers.

Three quarters of those polled are trying to be as economical as possible, said energy provider Utilita.

It advises turning the heating off when out to save £80 a year and unplugging unused electrical items and avoiding using standbys. Turning off lights in unoccupied rooms will save £14.

CLAPPING for NHS staff has resulted in a bizarre spike in accidents, according to a doctor.

Dr Richard Pilling claimed the nationwide Thursday night ritual had led to a surge in visits to A&E.

He revealed the trend to colleague Dr John Wright who disclosed it in a diary of the pandemic for the BBC.

Dr Pilling, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Harrogate District Hospital said the weekly Clap for Carers made his work “a little busier”.

One woman fell and slashed her knee while trying to get a better view, he said. And people who haven’t been exercising who jump up and clap may be prone to falls and broken bones.

DrWright has now urged the public to be more careful while still “vigorously” celebrating the NHS.
