Essential repairs can go ahead even in lockdown
BEING stuck at home during Covid-19 is bad enough but it could be unbearable if your heating has packed up, your roof is leaking or you have problems with your electrics.
Paula Higgins, chief executive of the HomeOwners Alliance, said even minor issues can prey on the mind: “If you have a problem with your roof or heating, or penetrating damp that cannot wait, you can call in help, even during lockdown.”
The Government says tradespeople may still carry out vital repairs and maintenance, provided they have no virus symptoms, however mild, and follow social distancing guidelines.
Finding somebody willing to help may be a challenge. Higgins said: “Many plumbers and gas engineers are still operating but some have closed until further notice, so be prepared to phone around.”
Prioritise responsible tradespeople who take precautions. For example, Pimlico Plumbers says all its workers carry face masks, hand sanitiser, tissues, anti-bacterial wipes and disposable gloves.
Higgins said you cannot have work done if anybody in your household has Covid-19 symptoms, is isolating or has been advised to shield: “The exception is if there is a direct safety risk, such as emergency plumbing or repairs, and somebody is willing to come.”
Remember distancing rules during the visit. Higgins said: “Ideally, stay in another room, and wash your hands frequently.”
Jake Magowan of Resi Connect Marketplace said you can buy tools and supplies for essential work, such as repairing a damaged fence: “Maintenance and upkeep is fine, but renovation and improvements are classified as non-essential.”
