PICKS OF THE DAY

-

Health: NHS Heroes: Fighting To Save Our Lives, C4, 9pm

Each week millions of people take to their front doors and sound their appreciation for the incredible work being done by the staff of the National Health Service. This documentary lays bare the reality of the situation these brave people are facing. Luke, an intensive care nurse, has to make unbelievably difficult decisions about whose hand to hold in their final moments on his ward, while Jess (left) faces new challenges and personal sacrifices.

Medicine: GPs: Behind Closed Doors, Channel 5, 8pm

A patient awaiting knee surgery suffers acute abdominal pain, which combined with her underlying heart condition, leaves her fearful for her life expectancy. A woman having a diabetes review confesses to having over-indulged, a young man comes in suffering from memory loss and a distressed youngster is unable to describe his own symptoms when asked by medical staff.

Soap: Coronation Street, ITV, 7.30pm

We are reaching the peak of the storm in terms of poor Asha’s inappropriate video making its way to the internet via a series of WhatsApp groups. Enraged Dev, struggling as a single parent to react in the right way to what is happening to his daughter, blames Kelly for her role in all the furore and tears into her over the harm he believes she has caused Asha. Gary (Mikey North, left, squaring up to Jimmi Harkishin as Dev) is having none of it though. He leaps to her defence, a reaction which leaves Adam intrigued. That is not the sum total of the angst in Weatherfield tonight as Nina lands a blow on a young lad whom she catches pointing at the beleaguered Asha.

Thriller: Devs, BBC2, 9pm

Determined to derail destiny, Lily comes up with a plan – ignore the prediction that she is due at Devs. Meanwhile, Lyndon yearns to return but first he must persuade Katie. Later, Stewart spouts verse when uncultured Forest encounters him at the entrance to Devs, and as time ticks down to the fixed point Katie told Lily of, Forest seeks solace deep in the past. Alison Pill and Cailee Spaeny (both above) star.

Film: The Last Witch Hunter, Film4, 9pm

Dominic Toretto, Frodo Baggins and Charlie Croker come together in this fantasy adventure. Well, to be more precise the actors who play those characters: Vin Diesel, Elijah Wood (right) and Michael Caine. A medieval warrior thwarts an evil witch queen’s plan to wipe out the human race but is cursed with immortality as a result. In the modern day he continues to battle evil and faces his greatest challenge when the sorceress is resurrected to resume her evil plan.
