FOOTBALLERS’ wives and former friends Coleen Rooney and Rebekah Vardy look to be heading for an expensive court battle to settle their so-called Wagatha Christie dispute over leaked stories.

The women held their first arbitration meeting last week during a Zoom video call with lawyers, it was revealed yesterday.

But the talk ended in deadlock, with a source saying: “Unfortunately, it is crystal clear that they are still poles apart.

“So a civil case in the High Court now seems inevitable, and this will cost a lot of money and bring a lot of fresh attention and headlines.”

The Wags’ feud began last October when Coleen, who is married to Derby County footballer Wayne, 34, turned detective to try and discover

who was selling stories about her. She said she put fake information about herself on her private social media accounts, then systematically blocked her followers until she was down to just one.

In a dramatic post on her public Instagram account, Coleen, also 34, then revealed details of her ploy to her millions of fans.

She wrote: “It’s been tough keeping it to myself and not making any comment at all, especially when the stories have been leaked, however I had to. Now I know for certain which account/individual it’s come from.

“I have saved and screenshotted all the original stories which clearly show just one person has viewed them. It’s... Rebekah Vardy’s account.”

Coleen’s tactics led to her being dubbed “Wagatha Christie” in the media. But Rebekah, 38, who is married to England and Leicester City striker Jamie, 33, strongly denied the claims and said she was not the only person with the password to her social media accounts.

She asked Coleen: “What on earth have you done?” Then when she was quizzed over whether she and Coleen had fallen out, Rebekah said: “That would be like arguing with a pigeon.

“You can tell it that you are right and it is wrong, but it’s still going to **** in your hair.”

A source said: “The women are still no further forward, so it’s now going to have to be heard in court.

“It’s a shame it has come to this but there is no other way. Coleen says she has plenty of evidence and she isn’t frightened to show it.”

It is thought Coleen, who has four sons with former England star Wayne, is threatening to sue for breach of privacy while Rebekah, who was heavily pregnant with her fifth child when the row started, wants to counter-sue for libel.

A source said: “Becky is adamant she’s done nothing wrong and, while she wants an end to this battle, she also wants to be vindicated.

“She was really hurt that Coleen went straight on social media to lay blame at her door, rather than speaking to her privately.

“She has maintained her innocence throughout and doesn’t want this to be brushed under the carpet without Coleen publicly apologising to her for the fallout, including a huge amount of abuse on social media.”

Representatives for the women have been contacted for comment.
