THE POSITIVE PROFESSOR

APRIL was an awful month for all of us. This virus brought the country to its knees, tore our society apart and shattered the economy.

Many expected the chaos to go on past the summer, but I never bought that argument. The evidence from elsewhere just didn’t support it. Countries weeks ahead of us on their Corona journey had sustained and rapid declines in infections and deaths.

We were never going to be an exception and our numbers are following the same pattern. Our way of life was devastated in April, but through May it has recovered almost as fast as it was lost.

We can’t stay locked away waiting for a vaccine that may never come or for a perfect test, either for the presence of the virus or to give us a certificate of immunity. Delays in getting the NHS back up to speed could result in far more deaths from cancer and heart disease than the virus has ever inflicted.

I understand that recent political events

It is harder for the virus to spread outdoors

won’t have helped, but we need to get going now. Getting schools opening together with all shops and small businesses soon is positive progress, yet there are still rafts of other restrictions that need to be cut away. We need a detailed timetable to get back to full normality.

Virtually all scientists agree the virus struggles to spread outdoors. So why not allow pubs and restaurants to have outside dining? Let’s get families and friends back together in parks and gardens. Small monthly changes are sapping morale. We should break new ground every week. Careful monitoring and testing are crucial, but there’s no reason why we can’t see a fully dated plan. If it needs to change, so be it. The public will understand– they would appreciate far more transparency.

Forget the political mess, the only thing we should be focusing on is how we get out here safely. June is the month to get our country motoring.
