‘Half-heartedness never won a battle’

-

JOHN Lewis is to reopen its stores on a “phased basis” from mid-June, so I hear. And I, for one, am absolutely ecstatic.

Not that I’m shopaholic. Believe it or not, money is one thing I am very responsible with – a fact you could bet on, although I do not condone gambling, naturally.

I am, however, a browse-aholic and the cathedral of commerce that is John Lewis Oxford Street is a prime location to graze on merch. My preferred hunting ground is their extensive cookware department.

Like a moth to a flame, I cannot resist the draw of high-value kitchen goods I’ll never use. Honestly, the hours I’ve frittered away gawping at fondue sets, avocado slicers, smoothie makers, sugar thermometers, those oversized pepper grinders you only see in Italian restaurants and the like.

What really hits the spot is the Le Creuset display. I normally hover for a while casually perusing the stoneware baking trays and griddle pans, careful not to look too interested as to attract the attention of a shop assistant. Then I’ll slowly turn over the price tag on a vast cast iron casserole dish, raise my eyebrows and dramatically mouth “TWO HUNDRED AND SIXTY QUID?! IS IT MAGIC?”

My addiction fully sated, I’ll then carefully turn the tag back over and go on my merry way.The best things in life really do come free. And I know that reader JamesWalton,
