WILL POST-LOCKDOWN SALES HELP SAVE THE HIGH STREET?

-

Yes

I KNOW plenty of people are skint at the moment but your headline got me thinking (“‘Mother of all sales’ coming as shops try to shed £15bn of stock”, May 28).

The bargains on offer will help those with less cash but they could help save some of our high streets if they get people used to going into town and city centres again.

Lockdown has given people plenty of time to assess their priorities, so if you still want a branch of Marks & Spencer close to home now is the time to act to help save it and other stores.

I’M afraid that the noises coming from some of our most famous retailers sound like the death throes of animals that have been overtaken by evolution.

Lockdown has merely hastened the transition to online shopping, as those who didn’t have the time or didn’t understand how to do it have had to adapt and learn, and quickly.

If the shops you mention, such as John Lewis and M&S, want to survive they need to up their game online to cater for changing shopping habits or they will cease to exist.
